The name “Mamelukes” still holds great
evocative power today, conjuring up images of a
legendary and fascinating Orient populated by indomitable knights.
This fascination has endured through the centuries and was
revived during the Egyptian campaign of 1789, then
through the Orientalist painters and a veritable “Mameluke
mania” that swept through Cairo in the second half of the
19th century.
The exhibition aims to shed light on this little-known culture
and its unique characteristics, adopting a very
broad and transregional perspective that encompasses the numerous and rich
exchanges between the Mamluks and other civilizations
in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Going beyond the
best-known aspect, the Furusyya, the exhibition will also
highlight the complexity and diversity of Mamluk society.
